The Horse Nutrition course is an educational experience based on knowledge from equine experts at Michigan State University. Participants will discover a wealth of resources for learning about the many contributing factors for the proper nutritional diet of a horse. Having knowledge of horse nutrition and feeding management practices is a necessity for all horse owners. A proper diet can lead to a healthier and higher performing horse.
Goal:
The specific goal of this course is to gain knowledge of the nutritional requirements necessary for the appropriate diet of a horse based on their specific needs, in addition to recognizing the importance of applying suitable feeding management practices.
Overview of Topics:
In this course you will learn about many aspects of horse nutrition including anatomy, horse behavior, nutrients, nutritional requirements, feedstuffs, evaluating and balancing a ration, diseases affecting nutrition, and feeding management.
More specifically, you will learn about:
- The functionality of the digestive anatomy of a horse
- Ingestive behaviors of a horse including grazing, feed intake, and herd interactions
- How the major nutrients are digested, absorbed and utilized by equine
- Nutritional requirements for broodmares, growing horses, equine athletes, and geriatric horses
- Feedstuffs including forage, grains, and supplements
- How diseases can affect the nutritional requirements of a horse
- How to evaluate and develop a feeding ration
- Feeding management strategies
