Body condition scores for horses range from 1 to 9. A body condition score of 1 denotes an extremely emaciated body condition devoid of all fat stores. A body condition score of 9 represents an extremely fat horse. A score of 5, which is considered an average or moderate body condition.  Keeping a horse close to a moderate body condition and avoiding the extremes (either thin or fat) is usually the best management plan for most horses.
